Tuesday 10/14 9 a.m. ET

Just a little update on Eli. A fungus, not a bacteria, was found on the cultures that were taken from Eli's shunt tap on Friday. The good news is that the fungus appears to be non-viable and the doctors think it probably didn't come from inside Eli's head (perhaps it came from the plate they used or something--most of this is beyond me). In any case, the famous Doctor Duncan is now on the job and infectious disease is back on the job. Eli slept terribly again last night, but that may have been due simply to all the interruptions--like the nurse who, do or die, had to take Eli's blood pressure at 4 a.m. and thoughtfully tried to calm her with a rattle. "Do you think she's in pain?" the nurse asked Lia. "She's just tired," responded my sleepy bride. After the nurse had left and Lia had calmed Eli down a bit, the nurse came bouncing back into the room with a loud and officious offer: "If she's in pain, we can give her some tylenol..." "Oh," said Lia, "Thank you. I think she's just tired." These nurses are a blood pressure- and tylenol-happy bunch. The good news from last night is that Eli ate without vomiting. They're going to continue to observe the fungus for a while before they tap the fluid around the shunt. Everything is sort of in limbo at this point.

Thanks for the update. We're happy that it is a fungus and not a bacteria-- things are looking up, right? We are going to start an Anti-New Haven Nurses Foundation in honor of Eli. Perhaps that will straighten out their acts.
