In the Meantime

ELI: Mommy, what does, "In the meantime" mean?

LIA: It means the time between now and some other time. So I could say, "We're going shopping in twenty minutes. Let's read a story in the meantime."

ELI (disappointed): Oh. I thought it meant the time when you're supposed to be mean.

Eli, I understand you. I am often accused of taking things much too literally.
