"A [insert time] ago today..." Lia is wont to say on any child's birthday. "You were SOOOO pregnant," fill in the rest of the children. Today, that was the case with our girl MIRIAM!In one year's time we have gone from this
to this. And oh what a joy it has been. Miriam was born during our favorite meteor shower, the Perseid, which climaxes the night of August 12-August 13th. Lia knew she wanted to give the coming baby girl the middle name Estelle, which means star, and is in honor of her grandmother's grandmother Estelle (Stella) Warclaw, so it was extraordinarily special that Miriam was born as the stars were falling. (And hail, as some who got new roofs as a result may recall.) The two times the Justin Collings family has attempted camping in the twelve years we've lived in this home, it has been during the Perseid meteor shower. Lia declared, in her continual efforts to make us a camping family, that since Miriam Estelle came to earth during said meteor shower, it naturally followed that her birth should be celebrated each year by a family camping trip.

(Fun musical mat present from Nin and Opa and stacking bath blocks from Grandma and Grandpa)
(Meeting up with Julia at the library to hand off the game day shirts Miriam gifted all her family members, beating the Education Week rush that often empties the toddler bins)

(Our homemade Edible Arrangement, largely crafted by Patti, who showed up in a pinch to cut out the pineapple, dip the strawberries, and chocolify the bananas. Miriam was positively breathless.)

We confess that we use the term "camping" quite loosely. Readers observing our snapshots closely may deduce that "camping" does not necessarily mean you are underneath the [shooting stars] (or the gibbous moon, which provided enough light pollution to render it brighter in the wild than in our own backyard); does not mean you are without a bed; does not mean you are without A/C, a microwave, or a small fridge; does not mean that you are more than stone's throw from I-15. While it does mean that you are without a shower, it does not mean that you are not as near the shower house as you may well be in your own home. But the made-ahead tinfoil dinners that only required reheating in a fire did manage to catch on fire on the propane stove since fires were not allowed at the campground, and everyone did end up with at least one bug bite. Gwyn had two.
We did NOT have to make any last-minute runs to Costco, so the outing was a success, and we are eager for Miriam's next birthday, which we hope falls on more auspicious astronomical terms.
